Equal Opportiunity and Gender Discrimination

Any denial of equality and opportunity on the basis of gender is gender discrimination. Gender discrimination has been a part of the Indian society for a very long time and has affected both the genders, but more so over women. In the present time, gender discrimination has comparatively decreased with respect to earlier times but it still persists. It is also one of the biggest factors degrading country's development. This practice is not only followed in the backward areas of our country where people are not well versed but is highly common among our so called literate class of our society. They still think women are meant to stay at home, do the entire household and just bear children for them. .
Discrimination against women starts from their birth and continues throughout their lives. Gender discrimination can also be easily observed in our daily lives. An unborn child is aborted with the help of sex determination techniques. Some people consider girl child as a burden on them and thus do not give equal treatment as given to boys. For example, in a sport like cricket, there are two types of cricket, a women's team and a men's team. It can be seen that more attention and even financial support is given to men's cricket team, especially in India. Channel owners don't broadcast women matches on their channels just because their viewership is not as high as compared to men's. So channel owners earn more by broadcasting men matches as there are more people watching it. Women playing the same sport do not get the same kind of fame or popularity which usually a man gets. This discourages other women to play sport as they don't get what they deserve for their hard work.
In the backward areas of the country, women are denied to get any education and in many cases it is limited to the elementary level. They are married at an early age which puts end to any possibilities of growth and development.
