Why The Great Gatsby is Valuable Literature

There is also the questionable love of Daisy and Gatsby. At first glance it is just Gatsby who has an unrequited love for Daisy who sort of loves him back, but upon further inspection we can question "Does Gatsby love Daisy at all, or does he love the wealthy upper-class lifestyle she represents?" This leads us to the next theme which is the American dream. .
The American Dream/ Wealth/ Dreams and Goals.
Many characters have the American dream in this novel such as Nick Carraway, the narrator throughout the novel, who moves to New York to become a bond salesman in hopes of making his own fortune. Nick is also arguably the most innocent among the main cast of characters usually not doing things that are wrong and being a mostly honest man. Another character who pursues the American dream is Myrtle Wilson who is sick of her husband and wants a taste of the finer life and so sleeps with a sleazy rich man in hopes of pursuing that taste and living a wealthier life as his mistress. Gatsby is also in pursuit of the American dream in the novel. Gatsby does many things to achieve his goals such as becoming a criminal, throwing wasteful and lavish parties and even trying to break up families in pursuit of his dreams. I think that Gatsby's pursuit of Daisy is part of his American dream as Daisy could be seen as a physical symbol or embodiment of the wealthy upper-class lifestyle which Gatsby so desperately yearns for, which would explain his want for her. We also see the character of Jordan Baker pursuing her goals using dirty methods in the novel; Jordan cheats in golf tournaments to win and fulfil her goal. This theme also raises some philosophical and moral questions such as whether or not it is acceptable to do anything to reach your goals. .
             Society .
The cast of 'The Great Gatsby' live in the jazz era of 1920's America which was a rather carefree era which is evident with all the lavish and wasteful and over the top parties that Gatsby throws life in that time period could be seen as fake.
