Cyberbullying and Traditional Bullying

Nearly 43% of teenagers admitted on being cyber bullied last year in 2014. This means 1 in 4 has had it happen more than once. In the worst cases of cyberbullying, many kids between 12-19 years old commit suicide. In 2013, a 12 year old girl was cyber bullied so bad she took her life in Lakeland, Florida. There was around 15 kids her age harassing her on many social networks which also led to her being harassed in school. She received many hurtful messages saying "You're ugly" and "Can you die please". (Alarez 1) In this case, she acted happy at home around her parents and other adults which made her death very surprising. She appeared content but did tell finally adults at school about being bullied but little to no action was done. She felt like she could take matters into her own hands because that was the only control she had. Many teenagers have this thought right before they take their last breath. .
Another unforgettable case includes Amanda Todd. In October 2012, she posted a video to YouTube explaining how badly she was bullied online and how she has been struggling with suicide and self harm also. A little over a month after she posted the video she took her own life. Ever since seventh grade she was bullied in person and online. She constantly changed schools and blocked people online but they would just make a new account to harass her. (no bullyingexpert,3) She was another teen that felt like there was no way out of the horrible situation she was in so she took her life. Many people don't realize how severe cyberbullying is until after people takes their life, this specific case is an example of that. .
Society doesn't take cyberbullying as serious as they should. We overlook it by thinking its just "kids being kids" or that they can "shut the computer screen". Cyberbullying is a more complex subject than that. Schools, like society, don't take enough initiative as they should.
