The Phenomenon of Globalization

.
Additionally, most multinationals generate profits at the expense of environmental conservation. As developing countries intensely compete to attract overseas investments, the countries dangerously lower their environmental standards. Since the environment in developing countries becomes virtually unfettered, the companies exhaust the natural resources therein and dump carelessly (Quinlivan, 2009). Rivers in cities that house MNCs is a clear evidence of this insensitive dumping. Apparently, the multinationals are outsourcing to developed countries merely to evade the strict environmental regulations in their home countries. Environmental pollution resulting from the production activities of the business has also been immense yet the companies continue with business undeterred. A good example is Shell which made a profit of £14 billion in 2007 despite the massive assertions that it contributed to the suffering of surrounding communities (Zhang & London, 2011). Despite increased environmental awareness and the massive resources that developing countries have invested in environmental conservation, most multinationals have proven oblivious probably due to their economic prowess and political influence (Adelman, 2005). .
While many might consider multinationals as a source of employment to the many unemployed youths in developing nations, the working conditions in many multinationals are deplorable. Despite working for long hours under inhuman conditions, the workers are poorly remunerated to the extent that some can hardly meet their daily needs. A case in example is that of Apple's employees in the Chengdu and Shenzhen plants in China. Workers were on duty for up to 98 hours a month despite the authorised maximum of 36 hours (Cheng, Ngok & Huang, 2012). Wages were meager, and many of them went unpaid for months due to trivial transgressions. Underperforming workers were further humiliated in public.
