Most Effective Way to Diagnose Reading Disability?.
Various studies seek to suggest the effectiveness of early reading intervention programs from different cases. In a (Vellutino, Scanlon, & Tanzman, 1998) study, these scholars present a very positive feature of early reading intervention in the ability to help diagnose specific reading disabilities at a very early age. Ealry reading intervention is used as a mean to help detect numerous amounts of various reading disabilities so that they are able to enhance their reading abilities to an average level. A study was conducted to determine whether it is logical for psychometric assessments to be the only way to determine reading disabilities (Vellutinoa et.al, 1998). The authors of this article believe that this is not the most effective way to diagnose specific reading abilities, but that children should go through an early reading intervention program to help with their reading difficulties (Vellutinoa et.al., 1998). To contest concepts of the most effective way of diagnosing students, the experimenters completed an intervention study in which they "demonstrat[ed] that most children who perform poorly in reading can be readily brought to at least an average level of performance if their reading difficulties are addressed at the beginning stage of reading development" (Vellutinoa et.al., 1998). The study found multiple ways in which the psychometric-exclusionary approach failed in helping to diagnose specific reading disabilities. .
The first way in which the psychometric-exclusionary approach failed is by not being able to explicitly distinguishing between poor readers that were affected by cognitive defects versus those who lacked experience within reading (Vellutinoa et.al., 1998). Because the study does not help to distinguish between individuals who are born with a specific reading disability and those who are struggling due to poor teaching, it is very difficult to know exactly what is the problem that needs to be fixed.
