Some of the ways that hotels have lessen thefts and crimes are that properties have increased security presence, provide guests with in room safes, hiring trained personnel, installing state of the art security cameras throughout the property, becoming more aware of known criminals, monitoring the people that access their hotel (whether they are guests or patrons), switching out conventional locks that use regular keys to electronic lock and key card models and instituting tighter security checks on employees that they hire
In some cities, mainly largely populated ones, hotel security and the local police department have formed alliances to enhance efforts to reduce crimes. Some police departments even have a specific division that concentrates on crimes committed at nearby hotels. Hotel security staff and police officers from the specific hotel division set up frequent meetings where they share information discuss the results of the various security precautions they have implemented and other related issues regarding crimes committed at the hotel.
Another way hotels are keeping their guests and their possessions safe are that many properties today have installed electronic locks on guests' doors. These electronic locks use key cards, which are plastic cards that are embedded with a magnetic strip. Each of these devices contains a unique electronic code that enables a guest to unlock and access their room. When a guest's reservation has been terminated and they have checked out, the code on the key cards are changed so it is no longer valid. This helps decrease any unauthorized access to the rooms of the hotel. Before the electronic locks and key card system were implemented, hotels used conventional locks and keys. Conventional locks and keys made it very easy for thieves to gain access to guests' rooms. It was easy for thieves to have the keys to the rooms duplicated. In some instances the thieves or accomplice would reserve a room at the hotel, and as a guest they would fail to return the keys by saying that they have lost them.
