The Evolution of Technology

We have traded in actual experiences for a fragment of one and spread ourselves thin instead of becoming specialists in one area. It is now expected of us to be much more well-rounded versions of ourselves and of people from the previous generations who didn't have the luxury of technology as we see it now. Our capabilities define us, we are what we can do. And so with such a vast wealth of knowledge available to most people today from smartphones, and our smartphones seen as an extension of ourselves, in theory this knowledge, even if not technically my own, comes under the umbrella of human. This idea that we should be constantly learning from our past mistakes, constantly evolving and adapting to our own needs as human is what defines us. Yet it isn't this shared abundance of knowledge that helps to classify us as humans, but the decision in how to utilize that knowledge. .
The Internet has become an integral part of our daily lives, from ordering groceries from your phone, to dating apps and managing our finances. We do this because it is convenient. Why spend hours walking around the supermarket putting items into a trolley when you can order it all from your phone, all while performing any number of other unrelated, mundane tasks. This idea of constant multitasking has become synonymous with being human. With advancements in technology making certain aspects of our lives much easier, Information technology is progressively permeating all facets of our lives, from manufacturing and the materials we use to the structure of our DNA. The way in which we have evolved technology has meant that we have moved from having separate devices for different tasks; I have my iPod for my music, my Kindle for my books and my Gameboy for playing games. However with the idea of ephemeralisation, technology has shifted in a direction where we want one device to control everything, instead of multiple devices.
