The Importance of Earth Science

             Earth science also helps scientist in the study of the movement of the earth's layers. One of the layers that have a major impact in our life is the tectonic plates, such plates form part of the earth's outer-most layer. Each year they move a few centimeters causing them to build up tension and making the earth to shake and this is something we call an earthquake. Earthquakes are a sudden move of the earth's tectonic plates. Earthquakes occur at the most unexpected moment and place. The Northridge earthquake in 1994 caused many damages to properties and public venues. In present days we take earthquakes as an uncontrollable and serious threat to our life and property. However, scientists have managed to make an estimate as to where an earthquake will take place, but these estimations are not always right. Because of this other measures have been taken into consideration. For example, buildings are being constructed in a way that they could withstand the impact of such devastating disasters and thanks to this many lives could be saved in case a casualty of this nature was to happen. .
             Another factor that should be taken into consideration is floods. A flood is an overflow of a large amount of water that goes beyond its normal confines. The scientist responsible for the prediction of floods is a Hydrologist. Their job is to study the effects of water on the earth's surface. Hydrologists predict that floods will occur by using an array of studies such as monitoring the amount of rainfall that occurs in a real time basis. They also monitor the level of the water in the rivers that are known to be causes of past floods. The duration of the storm could also impact floods and hydrologists study such factors to alert the proper authorities about such things and prevent the loss of human lives.
