Universal Truth

What I am saying is that we cannot deny the influence of society upon the formation of our moral principles at the same time I maintain that on a broad level there are certain objective moral principles that all mankind inherently knows is wrong irregardless of societal practice or influence. The goal is to be able to make that distinction and notice where the overlap takes place between objective moral principles and cultural influence. Universal truths and principles exist but only on a very broad level. When it comes to topics and issues more specific it becomes more difficult to determine what the "right" thing to do is.
Some claim that rules should be followed independent of any idea of "universal morals". The people that follow this belief claim that the rules themselves are the significant part not necessarily what the rules are. Protagoras, who was one of the people that believed in this, felt that people should obey the rules of whatever community or culture people find themselves in. In effect what these people are saying is that we should conform to whatever our society at the present time tells us to believe is right or wrong, regardless of any previous belief or disposition. Does this not show that people who follow this are admitting to having nothing unique or exclusively theirs, especially something so intimate and significant as their own morals? If they are willing to let society determine what is right and wrong for them do they truly have any decisions that are their own or are they merely choosing from a selected few allocated by their society? I think this type of position is false because there is something that is almost robotic about allowing society to dictate what we will allow to be right and wrong. How can a person truly dedicate themselves to a set of morals when they may move in 6 months to a completely different culture and have completely different values? At that point I think people are simply conforming and performing mindlessly meaningless actions that hold no meaning.
