CPR

CPR and the heimlich maneuver are both used to save the lives of people who are in respitory distress. They are very different techniques and are used in seperate situations. CPR is used on an unconcious victim while the Heimlich is used on a concious victim. CPR provides a trickle of oxygenated blood to the brain and heart and keeps these organs alive until defibrillation can shock the heart into a normal rhythm which doubles a person's chance of survival from sudden cardiac arrest. When perfoming CPR you first check the scene to determine if it is safe for yourself to be there; next you would tap the victim on the shoulder and shout are you ok. If there is no response you would have to either have someone else call 911, or if you're by yourself you have to go and call. You would then open the victim's airway with the head-tilt chin-lift maneuver, then look, listen and feel for breathing for 5-10 seconds. If they are not breathing give them two breaths then check for circulation in the carotid artery for 10 seconds. If there is no pulse begin the chest compressions; there are 15 chest compressions to every two breaths. Check the pulse after one minute and continue until help arrives, the victim recovers or you just get to tired to continue. There are several events that have lead up to our modern form of CPR. The first apparent attempt at resuscitation interestingly enough was recorded around 800 BC. The first resuscitation was Elijah's mouth to mouth (Bible, 2 Kings, iv, 34.). ".And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands; and he stretched himself upon the child; and the flesh of the child waxed warm.
