Dawson


            The verbal exchange between Joey and Dawson coveys much of the meaning of the two scenes from the Dawson's Creek episode, The Kiss. However, the non verbal elements of the dialogue, music and camera shots are also important in shaping the meaning and viewers response. These features help to stir the viewer's emotions and create an interest in the future of the characters now more complex relationship. Firstly in the opening scene Joey and Dawson, share a brief kiss, then pull away suddenly. This shows that the kiss has left them both unsure. Joey and Dawson remain close together and sustain eye contact, up until the conversation becomes awkward and Joey breaks the closeness and sits on the bed behind her. Illustrating that the kiss, was a big step in Joey and Dawson's relationship. It is obvious to the viewer neither know what will happen next no only through conversation, but also the fact that neither has eye contact with the other and they are positioned at different sides of the room. The closing scene reveals that there are no longer the hesitant feelings, which were depiction in the first scene. Joey and Dawson walk side by side, and hold strong eye contact with each other, expressing the strong emotions Joey and Dawson share. Joey and Dawson kiss again but this time the viewer is left with a sense of happiness. .
             In addition pace, volume and tone of Joey and Dawson's voices adds another depth to conversation. Within the first scene the conversation is of a slow paced, with numerous pauses. The pauses suggest that both Joey and Dawson are insecure and uncertain. The slow pace of the conversation is due to cautiousness of the situation. It is also made obvious to the viewers that Joey becomes frustrated and annoyed at Dawson's, by the way Joey raises her voice has shows an aggravated tone in her voice. Whereas in the closing scene the conversation flows, and there aren't so many raw emotions.
