Curriculum Critiques

After seeing these illustrations I would think that the girls family is lower or middle class. Also there are no parents present through out the story. This could mean that their parents are at work, and they are home alone, or that their parents do not play a significant role in their problem solving. Either way they are uninvolved. This is a stereotypical way of looking at children of color who are part of the predominant lower to middle class society. .
The language is simple and age appropriate English. It's hard to believe that young girls would speak in rhyme with each other. The language is rather unrealistic. The behavior of Franny is quite typical of and older sister of any culture and the same for Ginny's behavior; younger siblings often imitate or idolize the older sibling. The story of the children shows a good lesson and help other children see that their bother of sister's actions happen with others, not just at their house. .
The formal curriculum is that even though a younger sibling may aggravate they older child by copping or wanting to do what you do they don't do it for the pleasure of frustrating them. They do it because they look up to the older one and what to be just like them. The hidden curriculum is that children of color's parents do not care for them and that they don't have any friends except for people that are the same as them (i.e. their sisters). This story is not meant to offend anyone, its meant to teach children that their family is common and this is a typically scenario. .
The teacher's edition of Scott Foresman Reading New Beginnings2 starts by introducing the "Program Authors". This lists the Authors, their achievements and their research contributions. Next, they list the consultants and reviewers; this is a list of the consulting authors and reviewers. The reviewers are mostly reading specialist and kindergarten, first, second and third grade teachers.
