In the Heat of the Night

In the beginning of chapter 11 Virgil Tibbs goes to the Mechanics with his car to get gas. Jess the Mechanic (who is also black) fills up the tank then goes away for three minuets and comes back. Jess invites Virgil tibbs to have dinner with him and his family. Tibbs sits down and eats meatloaf. Jess's son Andy had never seen a real detective before. He was excited to see Virgil and was thrilled to talk to him and ask him questions. I think it was a great experience for Andy because it gives him some confidence that black and any other colored skin can do anything they want to do. After dinner Virgil thanked them and said his goodbyes and began to walk down the dark alley where he left his car. Two white men ambushed him but Virgil knew martial arts and kicked their buts. Tibbs even broke one of their arms. Andy heard the commotion and ran outside, Tibbs told Andy to go get his dad Jess for some help. Soon enough Jess came running down the street and the police came. When the ambulance arrived a black doctor came out and the attackers wanted a white doctor not a black doctor. So the sent off for a white doctor.
Virgil tibbs got orders to go to the Purdy's house so he does. When they open the door they say that they don't want any "niggers" on their property and that niggers bring bad luck. I think that is extremely rude and racist, theres no reason for them to treat him like that, he is just trying to help. Inside Virgil Tibbs told Delores Purdy that she would have to take some tests to see if she was raped or actually pregnant. After that Delores backs off because she doesn't want them to know that sam didn't actually rape her. Virgil also explains that if they were lying they could go to jail for a long time so that makes them back off also.
When Duena wakes up Kauffman tells her that ticket sales have done better than expected and that they have gotten a person to fill mantoli's posision, she is happy to hear this.
