What You Think You Know About Politics... and Why Your Wrong

Is the conventional wisdom about politics often wrong? Kathleen Hall Jamieson, who is dean of the Annenberg School of Communications at the University of Pennsylvania and author of Everything You Think You Know About Politics. and Why You're Wrong, believes that it is. Jamieson is a nationally renowned expert on presidential politics, and the author of several widely acclaimed books on American politics to include, Packaging the Presidency, and is herself a frequent media commentator on "CBS News", "Weekend Edition", and "CNN's Inside Politics". Jamieson, with the assistance of a team of researchers, is determined to set the record straight about politics by presenting a collection of essays that challenge some widespread political assumptions. She spells out many of the misconceptions Americans have about politics; then she goes on to explain why they are wrong in their assumptions, or misguidance, and what the truth actually is.
Jamieson separates her book into four principle topics. Part I, "The Content and Effects of Campaigns", covers the importance of campaigns, whether or not politicians keep their campaign promises, if the press plays a major role in how the public views politics, and if there is a gender gap in political knowledge. From there she takes us to Part II, "Candidate Advertising". Though a little smaller than Part I, she introduces many interesting views on the effects of advertising. She discusses if political advertising affects voter turnout, if attack advertising affects voter .
             2.
Turnout, and if attack advertising creates a backlash from the other side. Part III, "Issue-Advocacy Advertising", is a very short section that has only one topic of discussion, do issue ads work, and if so when. The final portion of the book, Part IV, "The Influence of News", is just as lengthy as Part I. Jamieson discusses all aspects of media coverage on politics, such as whether or not local television news informs us as much as local newspapers.
