Search of York

In Search of York tells the story of a man who was forgotten in American history because of his dark skin. York should be considered a true hero, but because of the complexion of his skin he did not receive the respect and admiration that he deserved. We have all heard about the Lewis and Clark expedition and learned about it in our history books, but we have never heard of York, William Clark's slave who joined the expedition. Not the York of myth who was portrayed as a buffoon but the York found in the Lewis and Clark journals. He played an important role and if it was not for him the expedition might not have been a great success. "Prejudice has denied him the recognition that he deserves"(Betts 55).
York was considered property because he was born into slavery for being a black man. His rights and freedom were taken away and he not treated as a human being, However when the Native Americans saw him most were astonished because of his dark skin. They had never seen a black man before and was treated with great honor. The very thing that kept him form obtaining freedom in America was seen as a extraordinary thing and viewed as astonishing. This worked towards Clark and Lewis advantage in persuading the Native Americans to obtain what they wanted. The Native American culture was able to embrace York and accept him for being different. The white dominant culture could have learned from them. Prejudice is what kept America from accepting Africans and people of color. America was not able to embrace these different cultures and learn from them. York is a prime example, when he returned home, he returned to a life of slavery. He received no recognition because his duty was to obey his master. .
             Rodriguez 2.
York became a racial stereotype because history has been told from a white man's point of view. All the recognition of this expedition was given to two white men, Lewis and Clark. They took all the credit and York a black man was not even mentioned.
