             To what extent does research evidence (theory and or/studies) support the view that short term and long term memory are separate stores?.
             There are many theories and studies that support the view that long term and short term memory are separate stores. These studies and theories were carried out by simple experiments testing a series of people trying to prove that there is a short term memory and a long term memory. By these studies even though they cannot prove that long term and short term memory have separate stores we can still support the evidence that there is.
             The first one I will look at is the multi store model. Atkinson ad Shiffrin discovered that through rehearsal information that is stored in short term memory moves to long term memory for however long it needs to stay there for, this could be forever; this is because the duration of long term memory is unlimited. .
             Atkinson and Shiffrin discovered that there is long term memory, short term memory and sensory memory. Sensory memory is where information is kept long enough for us to decide if it is necessary for further processing. It involves our senses for example visual and auditory. If the information is necessary for further processing then it will be stored in the long term memory if it isn't relevant however then the information will be lost.
             When information enters the short term memory, without rehearsal the information is lost. If too much information gets into the short term memory then it collapses and cannot store the information.
             The term "chunking" supports the theory that there are two separate memory stores. "Chunking" is a way of increasing the capacity of short term memory by putting smaller numbers / letters / information into a larger group which has some significant meaning therefore easier to remember. The information has to come from the long term memory to make it easier to remember.
