There are many dissimilarities in exterior and interior construction. Exterior materials are the first set of differences I will discuss. Materials are things such as stains, wood types or nails. Stains are a better option than paint for your outdoor tasks because stains are more weather resistant and protect the wood much better than paint would. You can get waterproof stains, which is usually your best choice if you have a project such as a deck or a porch that you want to have study for a long time. Stains unlike paints do not come in a lot of different colors, but in different shades, such as mahogany or oak. In this case mahogany is a darker color stain than oak, this I just two examples there are many different shades most named after different wood types. Wood is also an important aspect of exterior construction. You need to know whether to use hardwoods such as Red Oak and Black Walnut, or softwood such as White Pine and Douglas Fir. When building outside it is imperative to use a hardwood type of lumber. Hardwood is a better choice of lumber because it is denser than the softwood types and is less likely for insect damage such as termites; hardwood is also less permeable to water than the softwood because of the density of its molecules. Hardwoods molecular structure is very compact and this leaves very little space for water to penetrate unlike softwood, which has molecules that are spread out. .
