Pregnancy

A home pregnancy test detects human chorionic gonadotropin, called hCG, in urine. HCG is a hormone emitted when a woman is pregnant. A positive result on a home pregnancy test is more likely to be correct than a negative one. An in-office urine test also detects hCG in urine. This test is almost 100 percent accurate. A blood test detects hCG in the blood. This test is virtually 100 percent accurate too. In a medical exam, the doctor will look for bluish-violet vaginal or cervical tissue to determine a pregnancy. The doctor may also look for softening of the cervix or uterus.
In the first month, the embryo grows to be about half an inch long. He has a definite head and a pumping heart. The nervous system is the first system the embryo develops as brain cells are already being produced. The embryo has eyes, but he has not yet developed his sense of sight. Buds appear as the first signs of arms and legs. At this time the embryo looks like a tadpole and is "no bigger than a ladybug" (Murkoff 109; Nash np). .
During this first month, the mother will also undergo many changes. The mother may feel tired, have to pee more often, experience morning sickness, and salivate more. Besides physical changes, the mother may also experience emotional changes. Her emotions may resemble those of PMS. She may be very sensitive and irritable.
In the second month, the uterus grows from the "size of a fist to the size of a grapefruit" (Murkoff 134). The embryo is now about one inch long and weighs "no more than a peanut" (ParentsPlace np). He has lost his tail, and his arms and legs are formed with webbed fingers and toes. The embryo's ears, tip of his nose, and tongue are also formed. His heart now has two chambers, a left and a right, that circulate blood through it. Every organ and structure has started to develop, but they will continue to grow. The embryo can move, but the mother will not be able to feel it yet.
