Beowulf Essay


            The story of Beowulf, and the burial site at Sutton Hoo have strong religious ties. The time in which the story of Beowulf takes place is unknown. The year of burial at Sutton Hoo is more widely debated then the date of Beowulf. Archeologists are not sure of the religion that the English were practicing. But they knowthey buried an important nobleman with many gifts and treasures at the burial ground at mound 1 at Sutton Hoo. It may be quite obvious, but other clues in both history and at the burial site point in all different directions. Beowulf has many Christiana ties. But some aspects of the poem are not accurate in the history of Scandinavia, where the story is supposed to take place. Instead they seem to be practicing English traits in Scandinavia. .
             The story of Beowulf takes place around the 700-1000AD, according to the book's introduction. Beowulf who is from the land of Geats, is seen as a strong and kind warrior of the region. During this poem Beowulf stands up and protects the Danes from the slaughter from an evil monster named Grendel. Soon after Beowlf's defeat of the strange monster Grendal, Grendal's mother comes to avenge her son's death. Beowulf then must fight the evil monster underwater where he almost looses his life. But thanks to an ancient giant's sword, he defeats this beast. The Danes are in awe of Beowulf and give him massive amounts of treasure and four horses, after he kills Grendel and after he kills Grendel's mother. When Beowulf returns home to Geats he is highly praised for his courage and his fighting ability. As a reward King Hygelac gives Beowulf large tracts of land and an elaborate sword. After many years the Hygelac dies and Beowulf becomes king. Soon after a dragon awakes and reeks havoc on the land of Geats. It is said that the dragon's layer holds large amounts of riches. Beowulf takes a group of warriors to the layer. With the help of Wiglaf, who is the bravest, and who didn't flee with the rest of the warriors when they caught site of the dragon, helps Beowulf defeat the beast.
