Gregor, Franz Kafka

The lack of values can lead to bad opportunities and a worse way of life for people in that current situation. People that haven't any values don't see true reality until something happens for the worse. The story "The Metamorphosis," by Franz Kafka, has lead Gregor Samsa to turn into a dung beetle because the lack of values in his life and the lives of people around him. .
Gregor Samsa lived his life full of misery due to him taking care of his family's negligence. He supported them while they sat around and let him take on the family role as the father. One morning when Gregor woke up for work he found himself to have metamorphosed into a huge dung beetle. He had remained very placid about this. He only worried about how he would work. On the other hand his family did not take his transformation too well. His father threw him into his room and Gregor did get hurt by this, in this situation the father/son values toward his son are shown to be twisted because the father son relationship has now been destroyed because the father cannot accept his son for who he is. The unconditional love is now distorted due to the fact that Gregor is a bug and that he will not be able to work and support the family, money seems more important to his father then to have a loving relationship. The father has low values because since he had someone to work for him and bring in the family income, he became an old, crippled man. He decided not to take care of himself or the family because he felt there was no need. Once Gregor wasn't able to provide for the family, the father became familiar with the situation and decided that he was able to work for the family. After Gregor turns into the beetle the father becomes a big bank official. The father was capable of doing so all along, but decided not to because it was not necessary. In a way this reveals his father's selfishness because he didn't want to work, even though he was able to.
