In the first scene alone, Shakespeare makes it more than obvious that Iago does not like Othello at all. From what we can see, the first even which set off this hatred was Othello promoting Cassio to the position of lieutenant which Iago wanted for a long time. He goes on to say "by letter and affection- by which he means that the military positions are appointed by favoritism rather than hard work and capability. In the beginning of the scene, Roderigo approaches Iago because he has paid him good money in order to help him get Desdemona and Othello ran away with her. This is yet another obvious reason that would identify why Iago despises Othello. Iago wants revenge, and it is easy to see that when he says "to serve my turn upon him- . The first thing Iago does to spite Othello is to get Roderigo against him as well by going to Desdemonas father, Brabantio, and telling him what has happened. After being rudely awakened by Roderigo, Brabantio finally realizes that his daughter has eloped with Othello, and demands a search to find them. Iago knows that this will surely bring no good for Othello once they are found together.
