After reviewing the movie, we can clearly see that she doesn't carry out that plan/goal because she sees herself obligated in taking her son Jason to the scholarship interview since her husband Ray was no where to be found. After the President of the scholarship foundation that was reviewing her as one of the finalist saw that she was married and had a child, diminished any opportunity she had of receiving such honor, simply because they thought that it would be a bad example to the other girls and that she wouldn't be able to concentrate as she needs to in her school work. Author, Ingrid Lewis, of Early Marriage and Education, states in her article:.
Schools often have a policy of refusing to allow married or pregnant girls or girls with babies. They may believe that it will set a bad example to other pupils [ ]. Even if they do permit them to enter, the school environment - rules, timetables and physical conditions - can make it too difficult for a girl to attend school and perform her duties as wife and mother at the same time [ ]. (2003).
In agreement with Lewis, Beverly accurately portrayed the movie's depiction of such situation in girls who marry early. .
Single Parenting.
Another concept or issue acted out in the movie is that of single parenting. In a certain way Beverly did not succeed as a single parent. She herself was still a child inside no matter what her outer image may show. She forgot that it was not just taking care of only Beverly anymore, it was taking of herself and her son Jason because he was not yet able to do it on his own being that he didn't comprehend what was going on. According or Dr. Margaret Paul:.
In order for a single parent to successfully be both mother and father, he or she must have learned how to be both mother and father to the Child within. In other words, we have to have learned how to nurture our own Inner Child - how to take responsibility for our own fears, pain, anger, hurt, and disappointment, and how to take care of our Inner Child in the world - earn money, set boundaries, and so on.
