An assessment of gender intelligence

Riordan concluded that children's concept of intelligence is dominated by the amount of money and respect received. Males dominate both of these categories and their intelligence is therefore held in higher esteem. .
As previously stated, different types of intelligence are applied to one gender or the other. Michael Marland (1983) experimented with both genders to develop a hypothesis on multiple, gendered intelligence. They concluded that boys typically outperformed girls on three types of abilities: general information, arithmetical reasoning, and spatial ability. These abilities are applied to mathematical and scientific categories. Girls outscored boys on measures of general verbal ability, spelling, language, and memory. While these "female" types of intelligence are equally important to development, they cannot be applied to many respectable professions. Therefore, this experiment demonstrates the disadvantage females hold at a very young age. .
However, Suzanne Skevington (1989) found that female's ability to use language better than males is gone by age 12. However, male's ability to perform well on their skills remains and increases from childhood to adulthood. This discovery suggests that female's intelligence is not being reinforced or celebrated by others as they grow older. Perhaps the education system is attempting to shape female's emotional intelligence into a more scientific and spatial intelligence as they age. When the education system tries to change what is innate, they are dangerously playing with intelligence. Instead of embracing what makes children intelligent and unique, they are instead trying to conform all students to a normative form of intelligence. This both confuses children and causes them to lose their own respect for what makes them extraordinary. .
Intelligence is measured in many ways. Yet, the most common ways are through standardized tests, IQ tests, and Wechsler tests (Marland 1983).
