In my opinion, the character that changes the most in the short story, "Good Country People" is Manley Pointer. In the beginning of the story, when he was first introduced, I believe he had the most positive personalities then any other character. Manley was a very quiet, humble, and curious man. The trait about him that was the most noticeable and respected was his passion for Christianity. He was supposedly a very religious man in the eyes of the other characters such as Mrs. Hopewell. He sold Bibles to people and taught Christianity to them. Manley also tells us that he thinks a lot. Coincidentally, he and Hulga are both going to die at a younger age. He has a severe heart problem. Manley was very interested and fascinated by Hulga's artificial leg, which is very ironic. My first impression of him was that he was kind and gentle.
Towards the end of the story, however, we see how Manley Pointer really is behind closed doors. A drastic change occurs in the story, and he becomes the antagonist. In fact, he represented evil and corruption. Everyone believed he was such a great man, because they never saw the real side of his personality. His real belongings that he carried with him were covered by his Bibles. Manley's belongings consisted of a flask of whiskey, a pack of cards, and a small blue box of condoms. According to the Bible, all these items represent sin. He's supposed to represent the evil and corruption of man in our society. At the end of the story, when he takes advantage of Hulga, we see the real evilness of his character. He tries to get her intoxicated, so he can seduce her, but he fails to do so. To get back at her, he asks her to take off her artificial leg, and runs away with it. To enforce Flannery O" Connor's theme of man's blindness to evil, at the very end, Mrs. Hopewell sees Manley carrying his Bible from a distance and believes he's still a good man.
