They go out of their way to thank whoever is lending them a hand, and believe it's the "Kind Spirit of the Woods." The Creature is left cards by them, and other small tokens of gratitude. In both film and novel, the Creature witnesses the family helping one another and even the poor that stops at their doorstep. They show no prejudice, which leads him to believe that he may be accepted here. The Creature knows that this meeting can be possible since the old man is blind, and can not see the monster's repulsive characteristics. But fate is against him and the Creature had barely conversed with the old man when Felix, Safie, and Agatha return home. The sight of this "monster" and the sounds of his sobs began a scene that changes the path of the Creature's life forever. .
             "Felix darted forward, and with supernatural force tore [the creature] from his father, to whose knees [he] clung; in a transport of fury, he dashed [the creature] to the ground and struck[him] violently with a stick"(Shelley 119). Felix's action caused great emotional pain to the monster. He realizes that his dream of living with the DeLaceys "happily ever after" can never happen.              The Creature's source of hatred toward humans originates from his first experiences with humans. The monster starts out with a childlike innocence that is eventually shattered by the constant rejection of society time after time. The first time he opens his yellow eyes and is witnessed by Victor Frankenstein, his creator runs in terror. Would this have happened if society did not consider physical appearance to be of key importance? Not likely.
