The Importance of Unimportant Roles

In some literature the information kept from the reader can be more powerful that that given. In comparison, a character that is either never introduced or only appears briefly can influence the other characters. These characters can affect the action of the other characters, the theme of the work, or even how the other characters develop. In the three books, Catch 22, Deliverance, and A Streetcar Named Desire there are insignificant characters with a significant presence. In Catch 22 the dead man in Yossarians tent affects Yossarians behavior and action towards others in the book. The families of the four men in Deliverance affect the men's actions concerning the mountain men and what they should do. The delivery man that travels to Laurel in A Streetcar Named Desire not only affects Mitch and Stella's behavior towards Blanche but what happens to Blanche in the end.
The dead man in Yossarian's tent not only affects Yossarian's actions but also gives him an excuse to why he acts the way he does. Yossarian will do anything not to fly missions because he thinks everyone is trying to kill him. He justifies this by the dead man in his tent. The dead man was a new soldier who had just arrived and went into the wrong tent. Because of this he was sent on a mission and killed. The only thing left of him are his unpacked belongings in Yossarian's tent. Yossarian thinks that if a man that didn't even exist could get killed then he will be too. The dead man also affects how Yossarian acts towards other characters. When the new soldiers are moved into Yossarians tent he doesn't like them. They were young and excited by the war and Yossarian couldn't understand what was exciting about everyone trying to kill you. When they threw out all the dead man's things Yossarian was angry because they had thrown away the belongings of someone who had never existed and who shouldn't have died.
