Pygmalion

The play Pygmalion takes place in England in the early 1900's. It was written during the time of "Victorianism" which was the English people's way to change society. Industrialization had brought a demographic shift causing many more unskilled laborers to seek work in the city. Such was the nature of the Doolittle's in Pygmalion.
In the play there are several main characters, starting with the two already mentioned, Alfred Doolittle and Eliza Doolittle. Alfred is Eliza's father, a miserable poor man who has no problem borrowing money from anyone to buy a drink. Then you have Eliza who is a bit different than her father. Eliza Doolittle is an uneducated, streetwise flower girl. Eliza's intelligence allows her to recognize her own self-worth and the worth of others. She then winds up seeking help to Mr. Higgins to become a lady of elegance. .
Henry Higgins is a phonetics expert and a scientist who loves anything that can be studied as a scientific subject He has little respect for most women and looks down on people who aren't like him and merely takes Eliza as a bet and could careless for her well being. Along with him is Colonel Pickering. Pickering becomes the caring, compassionate voice in Higgins's scientific experiment. He views Eliza Doolittle as a person worthy of respect and goes out of his way to help her. Along in the house with Higgins and Pickering is Mrs. Pearce, Mr. Higgins's housekeeper, a very practical, proud woman. She also cares for Eliza's well-being. Another important person is Freddy Eynsford Hill. He is a wealthy young man that meets Eliza and falls completely in love with her.
In this play it starts off as Eliza being a flower girl in the streets of London, where she meets Mr. Higgins taking notes on the way each person speaks. He starts to give Eliza a hard time and eventually tells her he could turn her into a Duchess. She tells him she is not interested at first, but the next day shows up on his door step to learn how to speak and become a lady.
