Abortion

In America, 43 % of all women will have at least one abortion by the time they turn 45. Judith Jarvis Thomson argues that abortion is permissible in three situations: the case of rape, to save the life of the mother, and when the mother's birth control has failed. Thomson argues her point on the basis that in these three instances the unborn fetus has no right to the mother's body. Thomson's argument however, does not clearly prove her conclusion. Thomson's first case where abortion is permissible, is when the mother is raped. There is many problems with this simply put situation. First of all, how are you going to prove that these women were raped. Some may say that they were raped just to get permission to get an abortion. You could possibly put a condition on this situation where the rapist must be convicted. Then you would get into problems where the mother would have to carry a child until the trial and verdict was final, which could be a very long and unpleasant process. Then there would be situations where maybe a women couldn't get a conviction, yet she was raped but still has to carry the child. There are many problem spots in this theory because there are so many different things that affect each individual rape case. Very few rape cases are cut n" dry, quick easy convictions, and swift through the legal system. Instances like this show that you can't just say women can abort in rape cases. .
Secondly, Thomson goes on to say it is again permissible to save the life of a mother. Thomson believes that abortion is killing, but is justified in certain predicaments. Thomson believes that it is ok to kill to save another life. This is a terrible problem to come across, yet how can you say that it is ok to save the mother but kill a young child. First, of all you can't always know if a mother is going to die for sure. Even if the mother should die you would still have a baby child with a whole life ahead of it.
