In our lazy nation today, most American citizens cast their vote on what they hear on the news. It is safe to say that the media primarily impacts people's opinions on political issues. Media also gives vast amount of information to keep us up to date with the changing world. It is important to watch the news, because it allows us to be up to date on current events. Without it we would be blind to the events going on in our world even in our country. It is scary though to think that such a thing should have the power to shape our world.
The media's job is to inform. It's how they inform that is the problem. Most magazines and even news channels have their favorite presidential candidate. You can tell by some of the stories they run or even how they tell only one side of a two-sided story to the public. If people start casting opinions by watching one media source, they lack the other side of the story. The fact might be the same in the stories, but what's different is how the reporters discuss the story. Journalists have different opinions and if one absorbs the different opinions, he or she might be very well informed about the issue. The reason we have different media sources is so one can have a well-rounded opinion on particular issues. You can gain access to so many different sources of media through the Internet, newspaper, TV, and radio, but it falls on the shoulders of the voter to obtain this information. I, like many Americans, simply do not have the time research everything therefore I simply take in what the media tells me. I need to break this habit and become more aware of the political scene. My first step was to take Political Science so that I could obtain a base for understanding how and why our government works. Now it is up to me to apply my knowledge in everyday life.
Media plays an important part in our society. Since the majority of the American people don't research things, they rely heavily on the media to bring them the story, however different sources of media is important if one wants to excel and gain more knowledge on certain issues.
