Once again her shallowness ruins the elating moment she rather not attend the event because she is too afraid that she will have nothing suitable to wear. In addition to her ungratefulness, she shows how manipulative she is of her loving husband by pretending to cry. This is seen when she acted as if she could turn her tears on with a switch by using, "violent effort, .

She knows how to get her way and managed to persuade her husband into believing that a new dress was necessary. It was almost as if she knew that he was saving money for a hunting trip, but still asked for a large sum of money. In no way did she express any gratitude, even though the amount of money for the dress was more than they could normally afford. After all he had done she continues her manipulation by telling her husband that, "it annoys me not to have a single jewel", and despite the four hundred franc dress she states, "I should almost rather not of go at all.
