Propaganda

Propaganda is an extremely important factor of our political system of today. Propaganda is the spreading of ideas through personal opinion and viewpoint. Unfortunately, propaganda is often looked up as an evil and obtrusive tool. Yet, it is basically just a perspective and an act of persuasion. In the first article, Cross attempts to explain the form of propaganda and the way it is used. The second piece of writing is written by William Safire; a writer for the New York Times. The first item expresses the use of propaganda including its many parts, as the second piece is a perfect example of propaganda put into writing. .
Propaganda is a tool used and seen in people's everyday lives. Unfortunately, the correct perception of propaganda is often taken the wrong way. Most citizens think of propaganda and the first thing that occurs in the mind is evil and wrongdoing. This is a falsity because we listen to and see propaganda almost consistently throughout our everyday lives. Some people do not understand or realize propaganda when they see or hear it. This article by Cross is a very intelligent look at how some people can overlook propaganda being sold to them. Basically, anyone being sold an idea or material object over another idea or another material object is being done so by propaganda. Cross describes propaganda more difficult to find then one would think. Through a large system of name-calling, argumentation, transfer of blame, question begging, jumping of the bandwagon and many more are some of the devices used in propaganda. Cross continues to insist that many ideas and different views on subjects are going to be heard by everyday people. "If we are to be led, let us not be led blindly, but critically, intelligently, with our eyes open." (Cross 428) Cross encourages us as Americans to be intelligent and to listen to everything and have our own views on subjects, not just to follow.
