Prostitution


            
             In Roman times there were various types of prostitutes, some were registered and some weren't, either way there were strick laws applied to keep prostitutes in line.
             The rules covered every part of life, and were as follows:.
             o The intermarriage of Roman citizens with prostitutes was completely forbidden. The wives, daughters and granddaughters of senators and roman kings were forbidden from becoming prostitutes, additionally they were not allowed to marry slaves, although if a senators daughter did disobey and become a prostitute she would be condemned lose her title but would be allowed to marry who she wished.
             o In 14AD Tiberius made a law making adultery illegal this meant that any woman acting as registered prostitutes were punished and their husbands rewarded.
             o Later in the Reign of Caligula prostitutes were taxed, having to pay to the state maximum sum they had received off a customer in a day.
             o Prostitutes were banned from entering the ground around the temple of Juno and if they were caught inside the temple were likely to be put to death.
             o They were unable to receive inheritance.
             If you wished to become a prostitute, you were required to register with the office of the Aedile. You must give your name, age, place of birth and a pseudo-name. You would then be given a license called a licentia stupri and were asked to state how much you planned to charge, with this information you would be added to his roll.
             Once a woman became a prostitute she was a prostitute for life.
             Creating the list of prostitutes in a given are was not an Aedile's only job. Their main job would be to patrol the streets and brothels at all times of the day making sure that the brothels were only opened at three in the afternoon until just before daybreak.
             He also had the job of splitting up fights and arresting any customer that offended or abused the prostitutes on his roll.
             He could also arrest brothel - keepers if their prostitutes dressed inappropriately, or if they were keeping unregistered prostitutes, fine them and run the unregistered woman out of the city.
