Fifth Business

"But what I knew then was that nobody - not even my mother - was to be trusted in a strange world that showed very little of itself on the surface." (Pg. 36).
When Dunstan borrowed an egg and was not able to explain why he took it, his mother gave him a beating. He always thought his mother to be very helpful and understandable but he was wrong. Upon being caught for taking that egg, he did not want to tell her that it was for magic. He thought it to be a violation of his privacy and that it was none of her business. However, she thought that every business was her business. He underestimated her. She is one of those women who wish to know everything and want to control everything. She could not digest the fact that her son would refuse to tell her something she wanted to know. She thought she had lost control over him. This made her anxious and her anxiety made her chase her son in the kitchen, beating him with a whip. .
Later, when she again showed her motherliness, Dunstan did not believe any of it. He could never forget that woman, who chased him in the kitchen, beating him with a whip. He had seen a different side of his mother's personality. A side that he had never seen before. Dunstan, previously, respected his mother for her values, principles and practicality. Dunstan stopped trusting his mother and everyone else too. The only person he might have trusted from there on might have been Mrs. Dempster. .
In reality, many people become lonely by not trusting anyone. They isolate themselves. They have had too many bad experiences with people and resolve, just like Dunstan, to not to trust anyone. They feel much safer. They expect anyone to do anything at anytime. They don't trust anyone and they don't have any expectations from them. So they are not surprised by anyone's actions. .
So, in a way, Dunstan wasn't unique. He wasn't different from an average human being. He just had some bad experiences with certain people and he stopped trusting them.
