Teens and plastic surgery


They seem to think that plastic surgery will be a quick fix to their problem, and they will be "cured" of their depression if they could just fix whatever it is about themselves that bothers them. "Opponents to teenage plastic surgery feel that some teenagers are picking the easiest and fastest solution while actually avoiding the root problem" ( Battalion). These procedures cost upwards from one thousand dollars, and often enough are not covered by health insurance, except in extreme cases such as burning or scaring, in which case plastic surgery is acceptable. .
             When getting plastic surgery, many problems can arise. According to brainevent.com, " Some plastic surgeries can be dangerous because foreign material, such as an implant is inserted into the body and can be rejected" (Battalion). There is a heightened risk attached to teen plastic surgery because their bodies are still in the process of growing and there is no way of telling how the body will deal with the implants when the body is fully matured. Their bodies may become distorted and disfigured as the grow older. .
             Recently a reality TV show has aired on MTV called " I Want a Famous Face". It is about young people across America running to the operating room so that they can resemble their favorite celebrity. It shows the graphic details of what goes on in the operating room and what really happens. When they come out of the operating room, they seem so miserable and in so much pain, and they almost always question whether or not they should have gone along with the surgery. It is a long way to recovery and often takes weeks or months to fully recover. .
             It is hard to think that these plastic surgeons can even think about performing plastic surgery on these young people. All these doctors see are money signs, and lots of it. Plastic surgery is up 200% from the year 2000, and many of the patients are teenagers (Monohan) What is even more hard to believe is that more often than not the parents of the young teens are funding the surgery.
