What is common good?

If he doesn't trust the people, why would he believe that he is doing anything for there good. But there is also the point that because Madison didn't trust the people he believed that giving them this strong central government that the federalist wanted would be for there protection and therefore would be for the good of all the people in the country. If they were to the point where they didn't know what was good for themselves and these factions are going to overpower the whole entire country, then giving them this government in which the people would vote for these people who could act as fathers and take care of the people. There is also the point that if you give the country such a big governmental area to work with that the factions would not be able to have the voice in the government that they would be able to have in a state government that Madison brings up in Federalist 14. He states that these factions will be less powerful and would not exist in the federal government because these are "enlightened men." This is a scary idea. The fact that the government is not going to take in account that the men who are working in the government may have there own agenda or be working for there own goals. The men are suppose to always do what is good for the people. .
             We still have this question as to what the common good is. I never really find any evidence in the papers. It seems to be that the Federalist consider the common good to be what the men in charge think is best for the entire public. They are to make decisions in the favor of the public, but then the decisions are made by the majority leaving the minority out. There really aren't any good arguments as to how we can change this system if it gets to be too tough. As Patrick Henry states, in Virginia there is at least a rule the citizens have a right to overthrow the movement if it is wrong, but in this government proposed by the constitution you need 2/3rds of the people to get rid of anything that is unjust or unfair but need just a majority to pass the same laws.
