Our school has an Ohio Reads Program which allows juniors and seniors to go to the elementary during their study halls to help the first thru sixth grade students read, as well as any other thing their teacher thinks is necessary. Along with doing this twice a week, I volunteered to tutor after school for someone who needed a little extra help.
I was assigned a boy in the sixth grade who was a little slow in math and required help doing his homework. He needed someone to explain to him one on one the things he needed to learn. I gave him easy ways to remember things and also taught him things he hadn't yet learned so when he was taught them, he already had a grasp on it. During this time, his teacher expressed to me how well he was doing in math and how much more he was participating in class because he was more confident in himself.
I believe that my school benefits from me being a mentor, along with my other classmates, because it raises the learning capabilities of the students, as well as their self-esteem. Everyone benefits when the younger generation is smarter and more confident.
The feeling of accomplishment when his teacher told me how much better he was doing in class was what made me feel good about myself. There is nothing like the feeling you get when you help another person. It is great to know that you can make all the difference.
