Soccer

Soccer is one of the most popular and physical sports in the world, and therefore poses many physical risks for players. Many people do not know that soccer is a grueling sport with incredible potential for injuries. More than often, people who do not know much about this sport tend to classify it as a slow-paced, boring sport. What they do not know is that soccer can be a vigorous, high intensity, contact sport. All over the world, there are approximately 200 million players in 186 countries, which translates into many injuries for soccer players. Yet, many of these injuries can be prevented through proper training and conditioning.
Like in all sports, players will experience injuries at least once in their lives. In soccer, players will very likely experience numerous ones. With over 12.5 million soccer players in the U.S. alone, it is estimated that between 146,000 and 160,000 soccer related injuries occur each year. Eighty five percent of those injuries occur in players of twenty years of age, and about forty five percent occur in players younger than fifteen years. This means that as players get older and polish their playing skills, their competitiveness increases as do the possibilities for injury.
The most common injuries in soccer range from severe bruises to more serious type injuries like broken bones. Over thirty percent of soccer related injuries are due to overuse of leg muscles and bones, which consist of mild tendinitis to stress fractures. Treating these types of injuries is a remarkably important part of rehabilitation and being able to once again play soccer or any other sport. Most treatments can be classified as simply basic, but are very important in the further use of the injured area. Treatments are as simple as putting ice on the affected area or elevating the injury to decrease swelling. Other, more serious injuries, require many weeks of intense physical therapy.
