The Decleartion of Independence

Finally, the extensive use of anaphora in the grievance portion makes the list seem longer. Each time a new paragraph is started the reader is reminded of all the king's wrongdoings to the colonies.
Jefferson also tried to include a large amount of detail in The Declaration of Independence but under a closer look it is obvious that not much factual information was used in constructing this document. When it was written The Declaration of Independence was meant to be heard not read so many gross overstatements were included without much specifics to back them up. He states that the king "has kept among us in times of peace standing armies and ships of war-. By the time the declaration was written conflict had already started and Britain had troops in the colonies to keep order and even to protect the colonists from the Indians. Ships of war were British naval vessels, which were probably being used to protect American merchants transporting tobacco and other enumerated products to Britain where the merchants conveniently had a monopoly over the market. The grievance "He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people." Is a huge overstatement. It is highly unlikely that the king could have done such damage to the colonies but it would not be unbelievable if some ravaging or destroying had been going on because they were in the middle of a war. No specific instances of raving or plundering are included either.
Because Jefferson knew that the document would be heard and not read, he added many things, which would flare up the colonists" emotions and drive them toward revolution. In colonial days religion was deeply rooted in society and so Jefferson made sure to include many references to God in The Declaration of Independence. In the thesis he states that all men have the right to the natural laws of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness which are laws of "nature and of nature's God-.
