They (his family) had just gotten used to it" (27). His family took Gregor, and all the work he put in to support them, for granted; in the beginning they showed delight in Gregor's efforts, yet as time progressed, Gregor did not so much as receive a "thank you" for his work, even though he was now working harder and making more money. The family also takes advantage of Gregor and his trust and devotion to them. Every month, Gregor brought home almost his entire salary for the purpose of repaying his father's debt, yet, without Gregor's knowledge, it "had never been completely used up and had accumulated into a tidy principal [Gregor] actually could have paid off more of his father's debt to the boss with this extra money, and the day on which he could have gotten rid of his job would have been much closer, but now things were undoubtedly better the way his father had arranged them" (28). His father went behind Gregor's back and took advantage of his trust, all in order to have some spending money for the family, even though Gregor was the one paying off his business collapse. .
Mr. Samsa, along with the rest of the family, had become inured to the money Gregor provided the family and therefore lazy, and so they felt no need to seek out other sources of income, even though that might have lightened Gregor's load. [FAM"S DEPENDENCE LED TO LAZINESS].
Leads directly into how he lets himself be used by not believing in himself and trusting himself. .
Yet, they go behind his back for their own selfish reasons(?) once again shows independence necessary ppl take advantage of him. Mr. Samsa's selfishness, which has been derived from his dependence on Gregor, is revealed when he goes behind Gregor's back in saving money,.
Not only is Gregor's family affected negatively by their complete dependence on Gregor, but his own self worth diminishes as well.
