Hamlet

His father had not been dead for even two months, not long enough to feel the wind of heaven. Hamlet illustrates the love he has for his deceased father, and then wonders the question "Must I remember?" (Line 15). Hamlet figures that if he did not remember the past, the present will not appear as bad. "Heaven and Earth!" he exclaims comparing the past to the present. Hamlet also thinks of his mother, and realizes the newfound feelings he harbors toward her.
Hamlet begins to ponder the reason that his mother had gone unto Claudius. He suggests that it is a hunger or appetite that had grown and needed to be satisfied, then quickly dismisses the idea. Hamlet thinks much less of women at this time then ever before, labeling them all as frail. Then Hamlet begins to think more upon the situation between his mother and Claudius. .
Hamlet shows pure disgust towards his mother, as she had not even mourned her husband's death longer than a month. He alludes to Greek mythology as he says; "Like Niobe, all tears" (line 21) (Niobe is said to be a goddess of snow and winter who had 14 children, all of which were murdered. Niobe wept until Zeus cast her into stone, and even then tears flowed from the statue, forming a river.) Hamlet uses the idea of tears to show how shortly his mother mourned. Both in line 21, and lines 26-27, the idea of tears is used by Hamlet to show his disapproval for his mother's brief mourning. Hamlet says that his mother's eyes had not even become reddened by the saltiness of tears before she had remarried in line 26. Hamlet does all but suggest that his mother had artificially mourned his father's death. Even a beast, says Hamlet, would mourn much longer before remarrying. .
Hamlet displays his hatred for his mother's new marriage by pointing out the expedience of her remarriage. His mother's speeding her husband to post, and burying with him their relationship disgusts Hamlet, and he lets that be known to the readers.
