Outline of Plato's Republic

That society will be almost constantly at war and will value as leaders, of course, those who are good at it. It will be motivated by the acquisition of money, but will not be open about it secretly acquiring and spending other peoples" money. Education will be compulsory and the general spirit of the state will be one of ambition and competition.
             3. The Timarchic Character.
Socrates describes the Timarchic individual as ambitious though not so well educated as he might be. This person is interested in ruling though he sees a good ruler as someone not so inclined to philosophy and dialectic, but more focused on physical development and the qualities related to military achievement. He will hate money in his youth and become greedy as he ages, lacking the balance of reason and a well trained originality. The Timarchic character is seeking to walk a tight rope between ambition and rational living.
             4. Oligarchy.
The Oligarchic society is one in which all power, political and otherwise, resides only in the wealthiest citizens. The impoverished have no say or representation. The ambition of the Timarchic character eventually leads to a love of money, a desire to accumulate more. In this society wealth is the primary qualification for leadership and those in ruling positions legislate in order to preserve their status. Socrates likens that to having a ship navigated by the wealthiest crew member rather than the best qualified albeit poor one. The power invested in the wealthy leads to a schism dividing the state into the rich and the poor. .
Socrates indicates that in the oligarchic society we see the appearance of another type of person he calls a drone. This character is created when someone who may once have had money is suddenly poor. As a wealthy person they had no particular techne. They were just consumers. When they become poor they are either beggars or sting less drones or criminals i.
