And upon finding out that his closest colleagues acted out against the emperor and his army, drove him to a dilemma, forcing him to make a choice of whether he should choose to side with those colleagues and act out and fight against the emperor or if he should act with the emperor and capture and/or kill them
             Having this dilemma of Takeyama as a driving force for the story, the dilemma forcing him to choose his friends or his country, Mishima shows the honor and devotion of this man to both his country and his friends. Such a great devotion to each of them, Takeyama ultimately decides to do the honorable thing by killing himself in order to show that he completely devoted to both and that they both had great importance to him and his life. .
             Throughout this story, Mishima demonstrates the love between two people. The love that was so pure and so rich between them that the couple inadvertently and literally couldn't live without each other. Throughout the story, Mishima portrayed the submission of Reiko to her husband. However, he showed this submission out of love and not of duty. This is clearly seen in the scene where Shinji was telling her about his plan on committing suicide and her response of asking him if she can accompany him on this task. Her passion and thoughts towards her husband also was strongly seen throughout the story. Mishima expressed her love in a simple sentence saying, "Reiko felt not the slightest surprise that a man who had been a complete stranger until a few months ago should now have become the sun about which her whole world revolved." (Pg 318) The sun brings life into this world; it is the true essence in which all life needs to live. Here, Reiko's sun is Shinji. By calling Shinji her sun, Reiko is calling him her life, a part of her life that is a major necessity for her to live. This romance is also seen with Shinji's feelings towards Reiko. "By day the lieutenant would think of his wife in the brief rest periods between training- (Pg 318) When not working, Shinji would be found thinking of his wife.
