Beowulf

Grendel's Mother " reached Herot, /Where the Danes slept as though already dead;/Her visit ended their good fortune, reversed/The bright vane of their luck" (Beowulf 45). She is just as vicious as Grendel, and would prove to be a tough foe for Beowulf. However he is be up to the challenge, showing his courage and that he will overcome another obstacle. Then on his way to facing Grendel's mother, he is attacked by the beasts of the lake she lived in, "The fight/Brought other monsters swimming to see/Her catch, a host of sea beasts who beat at/His mail shirt, stabbing with tusks and teeth/As they followed along" (Beowulf 47). This battle to the bottom of the lake, shows Beowulf's way of overcoming yet another obstacle.
A normal human being cannot be an epic hero, but if one were to have super human strengths and traits such as Beowulf, that human can achieve this status. Beowulf illustrates this when he is faced with the task of killing Grendel. He developed a plan that would help him defeat Grendel. His men and himself would sleep in the mead hall, while Hrothgar's men would sleep out of danger. When Grendel would come to the hall to eat his usual meal of thirty men he would pounce on Beowulf. Beowulf is ready for him, he will need to think fast, and he grabs Grendel's arm so that he cannot run away, and broke his hand. Weapons are useless against Grendel the battle is to be hand-to-hand combat. Beowulf rips off Grendel's arm and he would run home to die. The event is described as, "The grisly monster got his death wound:/A huge split opened under his shoulder; /crunched the socket, cracked the sinews, /Glory great was given to Beowulf" (Beowulf 18). After Beowulf rips off Grendel's arm all glory was given to him. However his task was not over yet. Beowulf's strength would be tested by his next battle with Grendel's mother. During the battle Beowulf needs help, and he finds it in a sword forged by giants.
