MTV

After coming to America from my native land of Kuwait I was unsure on how the American culture was going to differ from mine. Many of my friends had told me to sit down and watch a TV station called MTV; it was supposed to be very popular. After sitting down I decided to do this. While watching MTV I noticed that it contained a variety of music videos, game shows, and advertisements. What they show on this TV channel describes what a teenager and college student are interested in seeing. In every aspect of the TV station it is either trying to sell or attract teenagers and college students. .
From watching the show personally this age group of people are interested in sex and violence. Many of the song lyrics condone sex and violence making it appealing to the youth. In the videos, artists are trying to act out many of the lyrics that are played and this results in seeing lots of girls wearing practically no clothing. It also shows people getting in fights and shooting each other. People here find this funny where I come from it is very traumatic to see death of any kind.
MTV doesn't just play music it also has a numerous amount of shows that are played. One show is Wanna Be a Rock Star. This is where they pick out a certain rock star, and choose contestants that try and act like them the best. They have to dress like them, try and sing the lyrics to songs and dance. The one that does this the best gets to move on and meet that rock star. This is just one of the many different shows that are on MTV. .
MTV's commercials are ones that might interest younger people. There are commercials all different types of video games. There were also ones for food, candy and gum that would attract that age group. There were cell phone commercials for many different phone companies trying to get people to buy a cell phone. I also noticed that there were advertisements for alcohol, this is directed more toward college students.
