Civil War

History describes the civil war as a bloody battle between Americans fought on the farmlands of American soil. However, there was another type of civil war that took place, that many people perhaps overlooked. A war between tenants and their tyrannical landlords whose greed caused their pockets to overflow with wealth while many were forced to live in poverty. Although not actually a war, thisbattle? may have affected just as many souls as the actual Civil War.
The landlords used local sheriffs as their henchmen to control the tenants. A deputy was seen as someone to fear, not someone to trust. In a scene that could have perhaps came right out of Robin Hood, theevil? deputies went door to door demanding the rent. Of course events like this never last forever and eventually the tenants revolted.
In December of 1839, 1800 tenants had had enough. They banded together like a bunch of rag tag warriors, grabbed what weapons they could, and waited on the road for the deputies to make their normal rounds. The deputies taken by surprise didn't fight, but rather took defeat for the moment and were allowed to leave peacefully. This time, not a cent was taken. This was called the Anti-Renter movement.
In another example of revolt, impoverished workers formed a group of people who eventually organized a vote for a man name Thomas Dorr to be their governor. He was to be their savior, but the actual governor of Rhode Island wanted to put a stop to this. He got the president to bring in federal troops to take care of thepeasant problem.? Thomas Dorr tried to fight this federal action, but was eventually arrested trying to raise money for his military cause. This was called the Dorr Fiasco.
