Mystery



             Along with characters the setting that the characters are in must be realistic. The reader must be convinced that this story had already happened or could happen. The setting should fit the mood of the characters and the overall story. This is done by setting the story at a certain time of day and a specific place. The story may take place at night, on a foggy morning or during a thunderstorm, wherever the setting, it is essential that it is discribed to help the set the mood of the story and characters. In the short story Wrong Time, Wrong Place , the character Hal Runyer has to explorre the dark passages of a deserted building. The building is discribed as " quiet with only the sound of rats scattering around.the only light is the sunlight peaking through the thick dirt covered windows." (Deaver Jeffory 96) Even though this story takes place during the day the author discribes the building as a scary and dark place which helps fit the mood of the mystery story. .
             The plot of any story is the main character has a problem and must solve it. In a mystery story, the problem has to do with the solution of the mystery. In every mystery story there is a situation to be solved. Each major event is linked in steps that make sense. The story starts off with the basic problem and then leads into the three questions of who did it? what is it? and how did it happen? In the short story All the Lonely People , Sharon Maccone is a detective who must solve the problem of how her old friend and his wife suddenly passed away. As the story goes on the three questions come into play. Who did it?, is the first question and Sharon must uncover the truth of the sudden deaths. The second question, what is it?, comes in this story when Sharon discovers clues on the crime sense. There is a powdery white substance and Sharon is not sure of what it is. And the third question how did it happen?, is at the end of the story when Sharon is putting together all her clues and must solve the case.
