28 days later essay

In the first scene of the movie 28 Days Later, television is portrayed as a method to inject animals with rage. An ape is restrained, and forced to watch violent images over and over. It is implied that the viewing of the violence on the television causes violent behavior, and rage. This rage, which is made to be a virus in the movie, causes the affected to become mutated into very violent beings. It is clear that the movie has exaggerated the effects television can have on behavior, but to what degree? Surely, the mere watching of a certain amount of television can not cause society to evolve into more violent beings. In an attempt to understand whether violence on television can in fact lead to violent behavior, I have found that television has more of an indirect effect on behavior then the movie portrays.
Every so often tabloids" first pages are plastered with a gruesome story of how a child's favorite TV show led to them committing a violent act. The latest one I was told of involved a little boy imitating a character on his favorite TV show. That show was Power Rangers. Power Rangers is a children's show that is now often described as having scenes with violence involving hand to hand combat and weapons. Sadly enough this boy ended up killing his little sister by imitating one of the fighting moves. With so many rumored stories spreading rapidly, it is no wonder that it is a common belief that violence on TV leads to an increase in violent behavior. In fact, there is some reason for concern for many of the cases of violence, where TV violence has been a factor, have been documented. In Boston, six men forced a women to pour fuel all over herself. Then they set her on fire. Where did the men get the idea to do this? Well, the scene was shown on television two nights before the men put it into action. Similarly, four teenagers played out a scene from the TV movie Born Innocent.
