Words Hurt

What would you do if you where a little boy who was taught about racism when you where a child and you had to pick the right thing to do or the wrong thing? Either save a friend that is a slave and go to hell for making a bad decision or do what society taught you and in your heart not save your friend. In the novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn written by Mark Twain is a realistic novel about the 1800's. This novel is the kind of novel that if you do not have a teachers help you to understand it, you would look at it as if it was a misprinted copy. Nigger is a word that you used in the 1800's, but not the word is used against African Americans to get back at them for doing something wrong. This is a very great novel and it should stay in high school curriculum and libraries because it has good qualities and you can learn an extremely large amount of information from this novel.
The word nigger was never intended to offend any one person. But through the years that is exactly what it has come to. " Niggers is always talking about witches in the dark by the kitchen fire; but when ever one was talking and letting on to know all about such things, was corked up and had to take a back seat." (Twain 16) African Americans always have been talked down and they are just as equal as a white man. This novel has many points of view, and the word nigger has been totally blown out of proportion. Kids now days do not go up to an African American and call them a nigger. It is disrespectful and it was not what we where taught. Twain was just writing what was said and it would sound strange if he used black man or black person instead of nigger. It would make on sense. " Most everybody thought it at first. He"ll never know hoe nigh he come to getting lynched. But before night they changed around and judged it was done by a run-away nigger named Jim." (Twain 63). The reason that people get so mad at this novel is because of the language.
