Karate's main function, for Barry, was not to become safer in the city or to teach self discipline. It was there to help give him purpose. It did just that. "It helped me to be a better person," says Barry. "The symbol over our hearts, on our uniforms, is a fist. It represents justice, and that is how I have always tried to live my life." He even says it made him a better person. He even learned patience, and it turned him away from constant irritation with the world. Without Karate he may have been a completely different person, and he knows this. That is why he is dedicated to help Kim studios even when they are not in need because he was given that same respect by all of them. That was one of his fondest memories, but he cannot let that be the fondest.
Barry's best and most memorable thing that happened to him in his life was my grandmother. This was out of the ordinary for my grandfather because he was a rebellious person with a "kick-butt" attitude, and Carol, my grandmother, was very quiet and sweet. She gave him a reason to love. She was everything he could ever ask for. "She was the best thing that could have happened to me. I was in a bad way and she pulled me out of it," says Barry. She showed him what a good person he could be. He can never begin to repay the debt that he owes my grandmother for all she has done for him, and he would give anything just to see her smile. Would all of this be the same if Barry had received the ultimate American dream? Would he be the same if he was a very famous person with lots of money?.
As a matter of fact he not only would have been the same person, but he would have been even more generous than he is now. He would take care of his entire family first because to him family is the most important thing. He would then buy his very own camp for the Kids Camp group that he cares so dearly for. The only thing he would get out of this himself would be the fact that he would be able to travel the world with out having to worry about anything.
