College Health Care

Why You Shouldn't Get Sick at College.

Due to the shrinking budget of many colleges, the health care available at these institutions is diminishing. The result is more and more students finding it costlier and tougher to get into seeing a doctor. On most campuses you get what you pay for. For example most schools charge a health fee as part of the tuition to help pay for the medical costs of the school. Another problem is that although most students go to the school medical facilities for minor problems such as sore throats and routine gynecological exams a large amount are there for help with a poor state of mental health. Very few schools provide psychiatric counseling for students.
In the letter to the editor, Thomasina H. Sharpe M. D. contends that she has been in the health care of college students for seven years and although the pay is not as good as other areas of the profession, the emotional reward and satisfaction is very high. She says that she loves educating the students, parents and administrator about the importance of college health care. She also talks about how not only does it require giving the students medical treatment but also talking to them about how to deal with their problems and just being there for them. Most college students experience having to look after their health on their own for the first time at these universities and it is good that people like Dr. Sharpe are out there watching out for them.
